About Carol

Unlike many writers, I did not find my writing path until I was thirty. During the next few years, I achieved some limited writing success. Then life happened, as it does: divorce, work, mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), work, transfer from my home in California to North Carolina, work, permanent disability.
The desire to write never left me. In 2008, I finally recovered enough from the mTBI to write again. First, I wrote about the simple bump on the head that significantly changed my life. After sixteen years, these writings became a memoir with the working title Hit Over the Head. And, while honing my writing craft, I began creating fiction again.

The natural world is important to me
Nature—the tenacity of plants, animals, birds, the force of the sea, and the enduring land itself—gave me the strength to overcome the obstacles I encountered.
Plants reminded me that life can flourish even in harsh environments, whether they be seaside cliffs in California, or the crowded soil of North Carolina.

Animals and birds reminded me that living can be
hard, even while grazing in the fields
or creating a soothing soundtrack in the woods.

The ocean reminded me that even the mightiest
are bound by forces beyond their control.
And land gave me faith that no matter what, this place I live,
this planet, Earth, will always endure.
What I Have Learned
Despite the head injury that threw me onto a path far different than I ever imagined, I have a good life. Not the one I envisioned, not the one I wanted, not the one that even now I think could have been better.
But then, the life I had wanted might have turned out far worse.
The only answer to “What if…?” is that life would have been different.
